My CV course is now available
Thank you to everyone from TikTok Live who has been requesting that I produce a CV course to download and watch online.
I've finally done that!
It's available now to buy instantly for just £20 (or about $25). The course consists of 29 video overviews across 3 hours and 43 minutes.
Here are the chapters I've produced:
- Chapter 1: Introduction & Course Overview (7 min)
This is me giving an introduction and objectives. - Chapter 2: My Background & Context (4 min)
I give you a bit of detail on my background so you've got an idea of where I'm coming from and the kinds of roles I've held over the years. - Chapter 3: Understanding the audience for your CV (23 min)
I've really focused on this one – 23 minutes! – because I think it's incredibly important to understand some examples of how a typical audience is receiving and using your CV internally. - Chapter 4: How recruiters and hiring managers read your CV (15 min)
I've then spent 15 minutes describing how I see recruiters and hiring managers actually using your CV. - Chapter 5: Deciding on the length of your CV (8 min)
It can be difficult to decide on how to approach the length of your CV. Should it fit on one page? Should you give more detail? What is the right approach? I cover that in this chapter. - Chapter 6: Choosing and updating the style of your CV (21 min)
Canva or Word? Should you use a template? How many columns? I spent a lot of time on this topic because I think this is a really, really important aspect of CV design. Watch me walk through some designs from Canva and Word and tell you how I react to them. - Chapter 7: The importance of consistency in your CV (7 min)
Spelling, grammar, design... In this chapter, I'm talking about how important it is to be consistent. - Chapter 8: Introduction to the main sections of the CV (4 min)
Now, we're about to get into the 'meat' of the CV! Here, I give an overview of what we're about to discuss. - Chapter 9: The "Introduction" section of your CV (6 min)
Here, I discuss the top header of your CV – name, details, and so on. - Chapter 10: Your CV's Personal Summary section (12 min)
Then I discuss personal summaries... I have some strong opinions on that so I give you my perspective there. - Chapter 11: Your CV's Experience section (22 min)
Now, the experience section. This is perhaps the most important function of your CV: Getting across your experience. So no surprise, I've taken 22 minutes on this chapter. - Chapter 12: Improving your Experience bullet points (6 min)
Then, having discussed experience in some detail, I wanted to come to talking about how to structure the bullet points in the experience section. - Chapter 13: More detail on your Experience bullet points (5 min)
I've gone into even more depth here on the bullet points - I felt it warranted things. In all, we're well over 30 minutes talking about how to structure and lay out your experience. - Chapter 14: Specific CV styles for certain careers (3 min)
In this chapter, I'm giving a nod to some specific styles of CV that we often see from a domain perspective - legal, or tech, for example. - Chapter 15: The Education Section (7 min)
I give you some perspective here on how to lay out the education section. - Chapter 16: Qualifications & Certifications (5 min)
Then I move on to talking about how you might consider setting out your qualifications and certifications. - Chapter 17: The Skills section (6 min)
When it comes to a 'skills' section, I really like to see these integrated into the main experience body - so I give you more detail on this here. - Chapter 18: The Voluntary Experience section (4 min)
Don't forget the value of adding in any voluntary experience - I go over some ideas and suggestions for that in this chapter. - Chapter 19: Adding Projects to your CV (6 min)
I talk about the importance of adding projects - personal projects or University projects here. I also suggest not to rely too heavily on them, especially University projects. But, at the same time, I highlight how if you pitch them properly, they can be very useful. - Chapter 20: Other CV sections to consider, e.g. Interests (7 min)
It's often useful to include other sections on your CV such as 'interests' – in this chapter, I'm going through some sample ideas to consider. - Chapter 21: Including a References section (7 min)
Do you need to include references? In this chapter, I discuss how it's mostly not needed – because, if there is a specific reference check required, that will be covered at the next stage of the onboarding/interview process. - Chapter 22: CV Formats including Word & PDF (5 min)
I felt it was useful to include a quick few words in this chapter about CV format and why so many recruiters (internal or external) prefer Word rather than PDF. - Chapter 23: Answering the "So, walk me through your CV?" question (7 min)
It can be quite daunting when someone requests this, especially during interview, or even on the phone when the recruiter is 'screening' you quickly. In this chapter, I explore this one in some detail and give some suggestions for how to approach this. - Chapter 24: Tailoring your CV to different jobs (9 min)
Here, I'm expanding on why it's vitally important to tailor your CV. One size does not fit all. Tailoring your CV to the specific requests set out in the job description is important. I set out some methodologies to consider. - Chapter 25: Ideal CV update frequency (6 min)
How often should you be updating your CV? Here are some best practice perspectives from my point of view. - Chapter 26: Information accuracy on your CV (2 min)
I discuss the importance of being accurate on your CV. So, never lie. But at the same time, make sure you're presenting yourself in the best way you can. Sometimes it's frustrating reading CVs that clearly aren't 'selling' the individual in the best way possible. - Chapter 27: Confidential information on your CV (5 min)
How should you handle confidential information on your CV? I see quite a lot of comments on this in TikTok Live where people deliberately don't include client names for privacy reasons. This is laudable – protecting the privacy of your existing or previous employer is important. However, you can often give examples of company types without breaking confidence. This can be enormously powerful on your CV. - Chapter 28: There's no wrong answer - it's your CV, it's personal (6 min)
In this chapter, I wanted to make sure that I'm reminding you that it's your opinion that matters, not mine. In course I've been aiming to give you a baseline for what I think really matters – but fundamentally, it's important that you make the final decision. You choose. - Chapter 29: Questions! (1 min)
And finally, in closing I prompt you for any questions - you can comment directly in the course or you can email me with any questions and I'll come back to you as soon as I can.
So, there we go. That's the course overview!
Although it's almost 4 hours in length, I designed this to be consumed steadily. Yes, you could certainly consume it all in one sitting, but I would recommend popping in, watch one or two chapters... reflect... then dive back in again.
From a pricing standpoint, I wanted to keep things simple and accessible so it's simply a one-off £20 (or roughly $25) for instant access. You can buy straight from your phone's browser if you wish.
Thank you to everyone who has suggested (or, in some cases, repeatedly suggested!) I make this course. I really appreciate all of your support, encouragement, ideas and enthusiasm.
Thank you also to my TikTok subscribers who have been incredibly supportive on our exclusive Discord channel – some of the chapters you see above were suggested by them in their feedback!
